#CarrieOn : Care

Care for others is taxing, exhausting, daunting, and challenging.  Care for others is also rewarding, invigorating, motivating, fulfilling … and it’s our purpose.  If you lead without caring you are merely managing.  Anyone can manage - it’s just filling holes and completing tasks.

Do you KNOW your people?  Do you genuinely KNOW them?  You cannot care for people that you do not know. Every year I spend no less than 30 minutes with every staff member in my organization.  They choose the time (based upon a shared schedule of availability) and they can drive the direction of the conversation.  It is important to note that this is a CONVERSATION, not an evaluation.

If the conversation feels tense or is sluggish I always have two questions ready to pose: “What could I do to help make your job better?” and “What is your favorite part of your job?”  ANYONE can answer those questions and I want them to focus upon what they *like* ~ negativity is easy.  Take advantage of this time to truly connect and care with your people.  Listen.   #CarrieOn

Challenge questions:

How do your people KNOW you care about them?

Can you connect with your people in a new way this month in order to truly develop a deeper level of care for others? #CarrieOn
